Brewing More Than Coffee: The Soul of DAMN DECAF.
When people ask why I started DAMN DECAF., the obvious answer is this: I wanted a great-tasting decaf coffee, one that you could sip with pride, not as a second-best alternative. But that’s only part of the truth.
The real reason?
It’s about what happens after the climb.
Let me explain.
Climbing mountains. Hiking rugged trails. Testing limits under open skies. I love challenging myself, especially with other people, in nature.
There’s something uniquely humbling that happens when you're out there, pushing your body and mind up a steep incline with no quick way out.
At some point, the doubt creeps in.
Doubt in yourself. Doubt in your abilities. Doubt in your worth.
Your legs are burning. Your lungs are working overtime. And that voice in your head gets louder:
Why are you even doing this? You're not ready. You’re falling behind.
But here's the thing:
You don’t quit. You don’t sugarcoat it. You don’t fake a smile or pretend it’s easy.
You simply accept the reality that you’re on the mountain, it’s hard, it hurts, and maybe you're not performing how you thought you would.
And then, something shifts.
You pause.
You look up.
You see the clouds sweeping over the ridge, the sunlight dancing on distant lakes, the peaks folding into the sky.
Suddenly, in the best way possible, you feel small.
The ego softens.
The grip of self-judgment loosens.
You feel wonder, awe, and even love. And somehow, in that stillness, despair gives way to hope.
Hope fuels perseverance.
And perseverance leads to a deep, earned sense of accomplishment.
This moment happens, again and again, for so many of us out on a trail or mountain. And it’s beautiful.
But what’s even more beautiful?
The story.
When the hike is over and the summit’s behind you, that’s when the real magic happens. Around the fire. At the dinner table. The next morning, over breakfast and a cup of DAMN good coffee.
That’s when we reflect.
We talk about what we faced, both externally and internally.
We share how we overcame it. Or maybe we didn’t. Maybe we just held onto it and felt it.
We listen. We laugh. We connect.
And that’s what DAMN DECAF. is really about.
We’re not lacking stimulation. We’re drowning in it.
What we’re missing is adventure.
What we crave is connection.
DAMN DECAF. is a reminder to go chase the adventure, whatever that looks like for you, and then slow down enough to share it. With your people. With yourself. With something warm in hand and your heart cracked open just enough to let others in.
So yeah, it’s decaf coffee. But it’s also the conversation.
The story.
The fire.
The connection after the challenge
